When Don Barden started thinking about how he wanted to celebrate the coming of Super Bowl XL, one thing was certain: He wanted to make it accessible to everyone.
Traditionally, many Super Bowl events are private or come with a high price tag.
The casino magnate and Detroit businessman also wanted his three-day series of events to be eclectic and appeal across generations.
His Big Game Weekend Celebration Feb. 3-5 does all of the above. The lineup includes R&B legends and newcomers as well as comedy and pop culture icons, and includes Smokey Robinson, Little Richard, Chaka Khan and the Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards. The concerts happen at the Music Hall Center, 350 Madison in Detroit.
"It's designed to get people from all walks of life out. It's not just a concert. It's a party. It'll be like Hollywood to Detroit," Barden says. "These parties out there are very expensive and they're private. Regular people can't come. So we wanted to support the Super Bowl and we wanted to have an event for Detroiters. This is going to be the hot spot to party come Super Bowl weekend."
Barden also will be inviting some of his celebrity friends to the event, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Judge Greg Mathis.
Tickets range from $75 to $200, including parking on Friday and Saturday nights in Eastern Market with a free shuttle to and from the Music Hall. The concerts begin at 7 p.m. and the day-to-day lineup is as follows:
Feb. 3: The Ohio Players, the Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards and Chaka Khan.
Feb. 4: Vivica A. Fox, local comedian Koolaide, comedian Joe Torry and Smokey Robinson.
Feb. 5: Little Richard.
Tickets are available at the Music Hall box office, at ticketmaster.com or by calling 248-645-6666.
