My Fathers Day was certainly entertaining. My beautiful wife treated me to a charity event for musicians needing financial aid when they become hospitalized, headed up by Chicago's own Ms. Koko Taylor at The Park West NightClub. Resplendent in a red sequined gown and black sequined slippers, Ms. Taylor rocked the house with her signature tune Wang Dang Doodle. Still recovering from a significant illness, The Queen still possessed enough energy to tear the house down. She also introduced a female singer by the Stage name of Tiger Travis, a blonde coiffed sister who touched everyone in the place with her rendition of "Holy Water". Opening the show was the blues band Slack Daddy featuring John "Soul Man" Castro. Then it was time for the stars of the show, Dennis Edwards and The Temptation Review. Dennis and his boys were in fine form and proceeded to cover the Temptation catologue. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then these guys have the Tempts stone cold. I would guess that this group has been together about 8 years or more and it shows. Gone are the rough edges and missteps from earlier shows. They are as precison like in vocal and stepping quality as well you know.........Dennis, although ill himself soldiered through the performance while giving David Sea and Bernard additional duty. Their bass singer Mike Petillo looks uncannily like Ron Tyson. All in all it was a great performance by all for a good cause ...The Koko Taylor Celebrity Aid Foundation. Dennis and his guys hung around after the show and talked and signed autographs for the fans. He also recieved a special award from Ms. Taylors foundation honoring his mother who recently passed away. Dennis, choking back tears thanked everyone for their support, it was very moving. One more thing they are not the Temptations....but for just one night they bought back all that was good about a great vocal group and they illustrated it with the best performance of the Temptation Review that I have ever seen.
Dennis Edwards announced that on Febuary 3, 2004 he was 61 years old. Thats pretty dam good for a Temptation. I told Dennis after the show that I would say a little something about his show on the forum today and he wishes everyone well After last nights show I can see why Otis would be ticked at these guys....they smoke. :-)
PS: you gotta love Koko Taylor for what she is trying to do............................ ...
