Mark,
The music of the Temptations says much about the times their music was produced. It also says a lot about the African American male experience. The fact that only one member of the original members
of The Temptations is alive speaks volumes about all we go thru and all we put ourselves thru as well. The fate of the Temptations says as much about issues of self discipline, personal responsibility, and self
esteem as does their awesome recordings and legendary live performances. The Tempts off stage mirror the lives of so many brothers it's no wonder
they are the favorite group of so many. "Tall Tan and Talented". How many brothers who fit that description are in jail? addicted? Walking the streets talking to themselves while wearing a coat in AUGUST? The beauty of the Temptations is because they mirror the beauty and potential of the people they come from. The tragedy of the Temptations is because mirror the exact contradiction and pain of the people they come from. Otis Williams has the main room Tempatations, Dennis Edwards the road company version and I believe Richard Street has a lounge act version. These brothers have conflicts that go back decades, unresolved from one year into
the next. The Temptations are so much like us we don't even have to meet them to know them.
