USHER ‘MR. ENTERTAINMENT’ GUEST STARS AS MOTOWN ICON MARVIN GAYE IN UPCOMING EPISODE OF NBC’S MUSICALLY UPBEAT DRAMA ‘AMERICAN DREAMS’
BURBANK - September 25, 2002 - Grammy Award-winning superstar Usher will guest-star in NBC’s nostalgic new drama “American Dreams” (Sundays, 8-9 p.m. ET) as Marvin Gaye, the Grammy-winning Motown legend circa 1964.
The sultry Usher (nee Usher Raymond) joins fellow recording stars Michelle Branch (as Lesley Gore) and Nick Carter (as Jay of Jay and the Americans) who have guest-starred as musical stars in upcoming episodes from the series’ iconic era.
In the “American Dreams” episode, Usher re-creates Gaye’s classical pop crossover tune “Can I Get a Witness?” when the wave of Motown sounds was first washing over middle-America’s radio airwaves and became an instant music hit - and gave critical momentum to Gaye as a future superstar.
Dubbed “Mr. Entertainment,” the 23-year-old Usher won a Grammy as Best R&B Male Vocal in the past year and has produced four gold and multi-platinum albums, including “Usher,” “My Way,” “Usher Live” and “Evolution 8701”). He also launched his own music label, Us Records, last year.
Among Usher’s acting credits are roles in the feature films “She’s All That,” “The Faculty,” “Light It Up” and “Texas Rangers.” He also starred in the TV movie “Gepetto” and guest-starred in various episodes of “Moesha.”<br>
“American Dreams” is from NBC Studios and Universal Television. Jonathan Prince and Dick Clark are the executive producers.
