I went to see the Review show in Brooklyn this past Monday. The first person I saw was Rick the gituar player and talked to him for a few. Then I saw Ali before I went in. Here's what I thought of the show.
The Review rocked. Every one was in fine form as they sang the songs starting with "Standing On The Top" Then they went on to cover three decades of music Psychedelic Shack Cloud Nine,I Can't Get Next To You,Ball Of Confusion. Mike sang Rainy Night In Georgia. Ali impressed me with Some Enchanted Evening. He also sang Lady Soul Then they did Papa Was A Rolling Stone, they did it to a slower pace than usual Dennis brought the crowd to it's feet with the opening line.Ali also had the crowd going with Treat Her Like A Lady. Then they took us back to the beginning of the Temptations singing Get Ready with Chris on lead and doing a good job David Sea was fantastic on Ain't Too Proud To Beg and Beauty's Only Skin Deep.Chris was great on The Way You Do The Things You Do.
When the Manhattans were on Gerald Alston sang Kiss And Say Goodbye and near the end he walked away from the mic while singing and you could still hear him. I was sitting with David Sea,Mike and Chris. I looked at David when Gerald sang without the mic. I threw that in because when David sang I Wish It Would Rain ,which he sang it like I never heard him sing it before..I was like Oh,man...it's gonna rain. But HE walked away from the mic and he went off...you could really hear him he went to work on that song even throwing in a few verses of It's Growing and Since I Lost My Baby before finishing I Wish It Would Rain. Ali sang Don't Look Back. Then Dennis paid tribute to the deceased HOF members of the Temptations,Paul Williams,Melvin Franklin,David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks and going into MY Girl which he traded leads with David Sea and Chris went into Just My Imagination, then Ali went into Stay and Dennis finished My Girl.
I must say that I was impressed with Ali he,like the rest of the group really meant business. He sang Paul and Richard's lines in the Psychedelic songs and I never heard him sing those lines before. I could hear the difference in the harmony with him as opposed to Bernard. I thought that he blended in very well. For me the difference is that Ali sang HIS songs for the most part with the exception of Don't Look Back and Stay. The group's harmonies were tight real tight. With Ali and Dennis it was like a merge of the eras both telling each other to "sing" and lending their ad libs to each other, then add Mr. Sea singing the "Ruffin" songs Chris and Mike doing their thing...it was like I thought it should be meaning the members singing the songs that they did sing and I was glad to see them making it work so well. It's not easy to harmonize as great as they did with Ali being a new member and all. His addition fit like a glove This was the first time I saw him perform with the review...NOT the first time I saw him perform. To me the difference in his performance with the Review as compared to his performance when he was with Otis was he sang the songs that HE made..he didn't have to sing David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards' songs. Dennis did Dennis,David Sea handled the Ruffin songs as I mentioned which in my opinion he handles better than anyone alive today. They sounded great together and authentic ..like the recordings. They even had a lady in the front get up out of her weelchair and "Temptation Walk" with the rest of Brooklyn.
They reinforced what I've always said...they are the closest thing to the HOF Temptations that's out there today....THE REVIEW RULES ! This was the last concert of the summer at Wingate Field and it was fitting because when they leave the stage weather they are the headliners or not...THE SHOW'S OVER ! Just like I'm used to seeing when the HALL OF FAME Temptations performed when I was a kid.
I saw Curet 30 after the show. I wished that I would have seen him eariler he could have come backstage with me. I'm used to seeing him back there anyway. I had a great time with the guys and asked about Bernard. I asked them to give him my reguards,I wish him the best of everything.IMO,he's a great guy.
I even asked for a pass so I could scan it and show what a pass looks like since I have never seen one before. LOL ! ;D
