The Review played to a packed house in University Park, IL on Friday, February 11, 2004. The crowd was so receptive and happy to have the Review it was apparent from the applause at the start. The Review is loved and appreciated in the Chicago area and they certainly gave a fantastic and memorable performance.
The Review performed for about two hours, not including about a 15 minute intermission. They performed so many songs, it was hard to keep track. Not only did they do the standard songs that the Temptations are known for: Standing on the Top, Wish it Would Rain, Papa was Rollin’ Stone and Beauty’s Only Skin Deep, My Girl etc. They pulled some out of the past that even regular Review fans don’t get to hear to often like: Hello Young Lovers and Since I Lost my Baby.
Although the entire night was memorable, some moments were certainly worthy of more discussion, like Chris Arnold singing “You’re My Everything” with David Sea. This song was so beautiful; you would think that Chris was the original singer on this song. He just nails it --- and the audience just loved him (well, he is a Chicagoan). And when Dennis Edwards talked about his fallen brothers, he introduced each member of the Review and allowed them to sing a little bit of their specialty songs. Chris --- again --- who I must say was pretty much on fire that night --- sang Can I, reminiscent of the late great Eddie James Kendricks --- Oh my god, I really don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. As long as I live, I don’t think I will ever hear anyone sing that song quite as pretty. All I can say is that he was amazing!
Now Bernard Gibson also left me speechless when he took the microphone in memory of the late great Paul Williams and flawlessly sang For Once in My Life. He sounded so like Paul (if you guys have ever seen the TCB Special 1968) it was an extremely moving performance. I never thought that Bernard was that similar in voice to Paul until I heard him sing this song. Not only did he nail Paul, he also nailed Eddies Kendricks Just My Imagination perfectly. He really has great range!
Dennis Edwards was also phenomenal. He really shined on lead on Friday. He sang “Song for You” and “Memories”, of course Memories is one of my favorite Temptations tunes and Dennis leads. Memories is still by far one of the prettiest songs that Dennis sings. And the way he puts the two songs together is nothing short of brilliant. I don’t think I will ever get this song being sung live out of my crowded little temptations filled head. Then later in the show, the crowd was standing on their feet with ovations for “God Bless America”. If you don’t have that CD, get it fast. It’s the kind of song you just want to hear over and over again.
I do have to say that even at two hours plus………………. It just wasn’t enough. It was a very special evening with a very very special group of talented musicians. I can’t wait til I see them again…………..
I don’t have to tell you what they were wearing because I took plenty of pictures, FNF is going to post them so make sure to take a look.
