....And I have been listening heavily to the father of Afrobeat music. I like to call it 'Rebel Rock' because Fela literally put his ass on the line to express himself freely in his music (most of which was critizing the corrupt Nigerian government). One time the gov't stormed his house and threw his 80 year-old mother out the window, and she later died from her injuries (the whole attack is renacted and put to music on his song "Unknown Soldier"). Fela is not for everyone, though. If you don't like long songs (his averages 14 to 15 minutes, but I usually skip past the instrumental parts). And if you are easily offended by someone critizing Western culture, and Western ideas about religion and such (he's hard on Americans, Christians and Muslims). I'm not down with most of his crazy ideas, but the brother was deep as hell when it came to panafricanism, and exposing how truly corrupt Nigeria was/is. I'm just on a musical journey. I'm somewhat of a student of my people's music. I'm just following the drumbeat. First The Temps and soul music, then I was exploring Peter Tosh, Bob Marley and Reggae. Now I'm at the root - The Motherland! Listening to Fela Anikulapo Kuti[/size] - who's body may be dead, but his message is not! FELA LIVES!!! Most of the chicks in that picture are his wives Later

Thanx for the culture lesson, Duchess. I have never listened to Fela before. I don't know if I can take 15 minutes of any one song! I thought I was going into overdrive listening to Marvin's Got To Give It Up! ;D
