On Sept. 9, I trekked to Allegan, MI, with the soul purpose of seeing the Temptation Review.
Believe me, it was everything I expected and more, if that's possible. This was my second time seeing the Review this year. The first time was at the Homewood, IL concert, which I have to say was beyond fantastic, and set my standards for concerts higher than ever. Because the Review is just that good. So, I had to see their show again, just so I could get that, heart in your throat experiece, pumping again (anyone who has seen the Review at their best knows what I mean).
First, the setting: I am a big city girl, Chicago, of course, so when I saw that they were appearing in Allegan I was like, where in the h..... is that. Well, let me tell you, this place was in the middle of nowhere Michigan, and the concert was set at a county fair. The concert seating area was pure dust, and fold up chairs, but no matter, I had come to see my guys perform and I was going to brave anything to see them, even the cattle aroma in the air. It was a beautiful night, a full moon, no less, with Mars red glow showing in the background, not too hot, not too cold, just perfect.
The first performer was Mary Wilson, she put on an excellent show. She was very personable with the audience, her wardrobe was fantastic and she looked great. She started with Aqua and ended in racy black, alah, Tina Turner. She said she was 59 and 1/2 and she was still looking for a good man. She was adorable. She performed all of the old Superemes hits, Where Did Our Love Go, Stop in the Name of Love, and Someday, We'll Be Together.
Then came the Review!!!!
Dressed to kill, in royal blue shimmery suits, w/ ascots and rainbow design gracing the front, they started with Standing on the Top as always and went directly into Hello, Young Lovers. I believe that they had to trim down their material because of the lateness of the hour. The Review didn't start to perform until about 9:40 pm and played until about 10:55 pm. Dennis sang Poppa was a Rolling Stone and then he started to showcase the talent of his Review.
David Sea, the consumate professional performer, brought down the house with Lady Soul, sent shivers down my spine, and Wish it Would Rain, which brought tears to my eyes. He also did a montage of I'm Losing You, It's Growing and Since I Lost My Baby. He also sang Ain't Too Proud to Beg. But, man could he dance. He was dancing so hard and so much I didn't think he was ever going to stop. He is just brilliant. What else can you say??
Chris Arnold, with his beautiful tenor, sang Get Ready and The Way You Do the Things You Do. He's just so cool.
Mike Patillo, sang Rainy Night in Georgia. It was exquisite and he really connected with the audience while he performed. This song is made for him.
Bernard Gibson performed don't look back, smiling through the entire song, so sweet, dancing across the stage, (I was in the 5th row, so every time I waved to him he waved back) what a great feeling. He also finnished the show with Stay.
And Dennis....... what can I say about this guy, everytime he opens his mouth the world is just better for me. Talk about holding your heart in your hand, I thought I was going to have a heart attack and miss the rest of the show. I kept telling myself to calm down, it's going to be ok......
Dennis, so cool, so fine, so vocally strong (I know, I'm over the edged biased) sang God Bless America. Had everyone on their feet waving, I was almost in tears it was so beautiful.
Then the show ended, unfortunately, because I could have listened all night.
After the show, let me tell you how gracious these guys are if you've never met them. Bernard saw me waiting for an autograph by the fence and personally came over and escorted me to the back so I could meet and get autographs from the rest of the guys. I met and talked to everyone except Chris Arnold. Bernard made sure of that. What a sweatheart!!! I was so star struck I can't even remember what I talked about. The plan was to take pictures and post them on the website, all that went out of the window when I met these guys. I ended my night by getting a chance to talk to Dennis....... be still my heart.... I still haven't recovered.
Believe me, if you get a chance to see these guys, don't miss the opportunity. They set me straight for at least a few months. I guess then I will have to trek off to the middle of nowhere again to get my Review groove on.
(I do have pictures of the concert, they will be ready on Friday evening, I will rush to post them as soon as I get them.)
I feel so much better now that I've gotten that off my chest.
